The basic difference between Stainless Steel and Mild Steel is that Stainless Steel is alloyed with Chromium, Nickel, Molybdenum and other elements to improve its mechanical and chemical properties. The properties which vary the most between steel types are strength, ductility, hardness, appearance and cost.
Stainless Steel contains a minimum of 11.5wt% chromium. It doesn’t stain, corrode or rust as easily as mild steel. It has sufficient chromium present so that it can form a film of chromium oxide which assists in prevention of corrosion.
